Bulk-Billed Home Sleep Studies – Direct Access

Bulk-Billed Home Sleep Studies for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

At Coastal Respiratory & Sleep Specialists, timely diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing—particularly obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)—can significantly improve quality of life, reduce daytime fatigue, and help prevent long-term health complications. To support this, bulk-billed Level 2 home sleep studies are available for eligible patients at Tugun, Benowa and Pimpama clinics, allowing comprehensive sleep evaluation in the comfort of home.

What is Included in the Home Sleep Study?

The study monitors key physiological parameters throughout sleep, including:

  • Breathing patterns and airflow through the nose and mouth for accurate OSA diagnosis
  • Oxygen saturation, heart rate and rhythm.
  • Sleep stages and efficiency via brain wave monitoring
  • Limb movements associated with restless leg syndrome (RLS)

These home studies are ideal for assessing suspected OSA and aiding evidence-based management decisions.

Medicare Bulk-Billing Eligibility

Eligible patients can access home sleep studies at no out-of-pocket cost under Medicare.

Referral Criteria for GPs

GPs may directly refer patients for a bulk-billed home sleep study when there is a high clinical suspicion of moderate-to-severe OSA. To qualify, patients must:

  • Be aged 18 years or older
  • Meet one of the following validated screening criteria, documented at referral:
  • STOP-Bang ≥ 3 and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) ≥ 8
    OR
  • OSA50 ≥ 5 and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) ≥ 8

When these criteria are met, patients may be referred directly for a home sleep study.

How to Refer

Referrals can be sent via Medical Objects (preferred), fax, email, phone, or through the online referral form. Downloadable templates, including Best Practice RTF templates, are available on the website for seamless integration.

To ensure smooth processing and eligibility, referrals should include:

  • Completed screening tools (STOP-Bang, ESS, and/or OSA50)
  • Summary of relevant symptoms (snoring, daytime tiredness, witnessed apnoeas)
  • Clear indication that the referral is for a home sleep study

The Administrative Team will contact patients directly to arrange the study.

Additional Referral Options

Referrals for consultations with Respiratory & Sleep Specialists, including Telehealth, are welcomed when patients do not meet direct referral criteria or require further clinical assessment.
